Wanneroo Menshed, WA

Wanneroo at work

Wanneroo Community Menshed is a remarkable operation.  Located in Daisy House, 6 Wade Court in Girrahween, members refurbish computers - churning out broken down, damaged or discarded pieces of equipment into fully operational units including keyboard, mouse with modern software installed.   For example the Shed is currently selling a Pentium 4 processor, 1 Gb RAM and 80 Gb Hard Drive (minimum), Windows XPro, Office Home and Student for $60,  But there is a catch - purchasers must be either eligible for CentreLink payments or pensioners.

"Our work cuts both ways", says Graeme Lewis, Shed President.  "Our members get a great deal of satisfaction in refurbishing the computers and many people who might not otherwise be able to avail themselves of a computer are now able to do so.  During the last 6 months we have provided more than 400 computers to needy people"

"Much of the training is on-the-job and supervised. We use our own manuals extensively" said Graeme. The Shed was recognised in the 2013 Australia Day awards for its contributon to the community, something we are very proud of.

Recycling has also become an important part of the refurbishment program. Unsuitable PC's are stripped of individual components  and then sent to scrap dealers. Hard Drives are dismantled , reused or, as a last resort,  carefully disposed of.

Wanneroo has been given the status of a certified Microsoft Refurbisher and is always on the lookout for unused or obsolete computer equipment.
